Specialist Project – Futuristic Building Design

So I’m currently doing my University Specialist Project. It’s a project that lets us Students decide what we want to do. As I am fascinated with architecture and completely in awe of the design of films such as Star Wars and Elysium, I decided I would like to have a go at studying concept art and modern building design to try design my own building and then create it in 3D.

1 watermarkThis is my first attempt … taking aspects from various pieces of concept art and contemporary buildings. I’ve been studying the concept art of Ralph McQuarrie, Syd Mead, Ryan Church, Doug Chiang and many more. Through all my research on fantasy and real life architecture I’ve realised that I’d quite like my building to have a purpose or a function. This building’s function is to allow more space in a crowded city by building up whilst preserving current architecture. I came up with this idea after reading about the sudden transformation of Shanghai and how the architects really wanted to make sure some of the previous architecture was kept to preserve the memory of the city … so I thought about how I could perhaps squeeze contemporary buildings into New York or build platforms above current buildings. I also thought it would be good to have an eco friendly building, however the leaf shape was purely by chance!  I started scribbling down ideas from the side view of the curved wave shape edges and then when I came to draw what the building would look like from above I realised it would be a leaf shape, which I thought worked quite well.

I’m pretty chuffed that I came up with this on my first attempt at designing my building, but hopefully we’ll come up with some more ideas over the next week.
